How can Artificial Intelligence be Governed?

Thank you to Paul Samson, President, Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) for speaking on “How can Artificial Intelligence be Governed?” and to Peter Friedmann, CIM, ICD.D, Co-Chair of the Institute of Corporate Directors Southwestern Ontario Chapter for hosting.

Paul delivered an interesting, informative presentation highlighting:

· The delicate balance needed to manage the benefits and risks of AI. Benefits include scientific advancements in understanding protein folding, healthcare applications, personalized education, improving agriculture yields, and better financial services. Risks include algorithmic bias, deep fakes, cyber threats, and disinformation.

· Impact on jobs, labor negotiations include a focus on job protection, the risk to analytical ‘predictive’ jobs, and the increasing opportunities for ‘new’ jobs requiring new competencies.

· Governance and regulation challenges, similar to GDPR, can regional or global regulations be drafted, the urgency on developing ‘AI Safety.’
